Required UVRF Swim Test

UVRF requires all members to perform a swim test. The UVRF swim test certification is good for 5 years. Swim tests for Hanover Crew are accepted and are also good for 5 years.

You must wear rowing clothes to take the test. Make sure you bring a towel and a fresh set of clothes for afterward.

UVRF provides life jackets for the scheduled swim tests, which take about 15 minutes. You do not need to make an appointment if you are able to attend a scheduled UVRF test.

If you are unsure when you last passed your UVRF Swim test, check here to check the date.

The test consists of the following (in this order):

  • Tread water for 10 minutes

  • Swim for 50 yards

  • Put on life jacket that is thrown into the water

  • Swim to the nearest ladder or edge and climb out of the pool

If you cannot take the group swim test, download the  Swim Test Checklist form and bring it to a lifeguard at the UVAC , the Dartmouth Gym (if open), Storrs Pond, or CCBA in Lebanon. Call ahead to schedule time with a lifeguard. For the Dartmouth Pool, please contact Dana Metes. For UVAC, please contact Forrest Pollard. For CCBA, please contact Marie Dumont. For Storrs Pond, please contact swim@storrspond.org. You will have to purchase a day pass at the front desk, then go to the pool and have the lifeguard administer the test. Don’t forget to bring a lifevest with you. (If you don’t have one, please inquire about borrowing one from UVRF.)

If you choose to have the swim test at the Dartmouth pool, please note that the lifeguard will NOT administer the test and you will have to arrange with the UVRF Safety Officer to administer the test.

Print out a copy of the UVRF Swim Test Certification form from the Documents tab (here) on our website and bring it with you for the administrator or lifeguard to sign. Wear rowing clothing and bring a life jacket (you will have to put it on while treading water). Send your signed form to UVRF, PO Box 419, Hanover, NH 03755 with “Swim Test” on the lower left of the envelope. Or, even better, email your form to us at uppervalleyrc@gmail.com.

Note: Please be courteous to the lifeguards. You may need to call ahead and explain what the UVRF swim test is! And, you must bring the UVRF checklist and a life jacket.

Swim tests for UVRF juniors are held during a regularly scheduled practice during the spring or fall season. Swim tests dates for 2023 and links to register will be posted below.

Swim tests in 2024 will be held at the following dates

The swim tests are at 6pm at the CCBA in Lebanon NH. We have sessions at 6pm and 6.20pm. We need to leave the pool by 7pm sharp so it is important that you arrive on time so that we do not delay them closing the pool.

The swim test takes about 15 minutes – we tread water for 10 minutes, swim a lap, put on a life vest, get out of the pool and then take the life vest off. You need to wear rowing clothing (a t-shirt and shorts is great) and bring dry clothes/towel for afterwards – your clothes will get wet!!
