UVRF 2024 Spring Junior Rowing Programs

Registration is Open (start with membership, then add program)

March 5, 2024 Update: BOTH SESSIONS OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ROWING PROGRAM ARE FULL.

SPRING JUNIOR RACING PROGRAM (8th-12th Grade)

This is our traditional spring racing program consisting of 5-day a week practices and 6 weekend races. Rowers and coxswains are expected to attend all practices and regattas. The program is open to 8 – 12th graders. Rowing is in all boat classes including sweep (one oar per rower, in 4+s or 8+s) and sculling (two oars per rower, in quads (4x), doubles (2x) and optional singles (1x). More details below! $375 plus $35 club membership. Financial aid available.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY OR EXPECTED!

MIDDLE SCHOOL (6/7/8th Grade) ROWING PROGRAM

The 7/8th grade rowing program, which introduces kids to rowing in a non-competitive, fun learning environment will now include 6th graders. The program is run alongside the Spring Racing Program at the same locations and times, but only meets 3 days a week (M/W/F), does not include racing and is coached separately. Once we get on the water, participants will learn to scull (rowing with 2 oars each) in coxed quads (four person rowing shells with a coxswain to steer). 8th graders may opt for that full 5-day-a-week racing program or the 3-day-a-week non-racing program. Interested participants may move up to the racing program during the season at the discretion of the coaches.  More details below! $225 plus $35 club membership. Financial aid available.

SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY! Safety is always a top priority at UVRF, and extra precautions will be
considered on a case by case basis for our younger and new rowers, but ALL rowers and coxswains must watch the US Rowing Safety Video and pass the swim test or wear a PFD. Learn more about UVRF Safety practices at our Mandatory Parent-Athlete Meeting on Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION:  Please note that because these are not school programs, participants will need to arrange their own transportation to practices and races. Carpools are typically worked out at the beginning of the season.

Requirements:

  • IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE (or volunteer where there is contact with rowers), you must be “Up to date” per CDC Guidelines with all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when eligible.
  • Swim Test/Safety Video:  All rowers who have not taken the swim test will be taking one during a regularly scheduled practice. The swim test consists of 10 minutes of treading water followed by swimming two lengths of the pool (any stroke, any speed), treading water and putting on a life jacket that has been thrown to you, then getting out of the pool with the life jacket on.
  • All rowers must watch the U.S. Rowing Safety Video which will be shown during a practice before we go on the water.
  • Attendance at ALL practices and races is expected; but some accomodations can be made.
  • Participation in team fundraising events, most importantly fundraising for our Upper Valley Rowing & Friends Prouty Team (Note that The Prouty this year is scheduled to be held on July 13, 2024 — attendance at the actual event is voluntary, but we will organize a team row for the event if it is held.)

Parent volunteers! We need you and we love you!  In addition to helping with  food, parking and safety at regattas, we need “launch parents” (no experience necessary!) at daily practices. There’s a t-shirt in it for you, and profuse thanks from the coaches and kids! Interested? Email Rob Hall (click to email).

Please note that to protect our rowers and to comply with USRowing requirements, volunteers such as launch patrol parents, parking attendants, commission control, stake boat holders, hospitality, launch drivers, etc. need to be aware of the MAAPP (Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies) and how to report if they see a violation. Policy. Details HERE.
